October 26, 2008 - York Divers' Annual UW Pumpkin Carving at Bainbridge Scuba Center

The intense rain on Saturday gave way to a beautiful day Sunday not only for Dives 3 & 4 of an OW certification class, but for yet another fun and successful UW Pumpkin Carving Event in the spirit of the Halloween celebration.  19 masterpieces were presented for the awards categories including scariest, funniest and most creative.  York Divers provided scuba prizes (of course) while the store as well as participating divers adorned the grub table with all sorts of goodies indicative of the season.  Jimmy Jones made his highly renowned apple crisp over an open flame to which Linda proclaimed at the end of the day..."don't touch that, that's mine!"  ...it is a delicacy worth fighting for - thanks Jimmy.

The dive site did not disappoint...the water temp reached 61F down to 25' and the vis was actually quite pleasant (in places) despite the training activities and intense runoff from Saturday's rain.  The south wall was the place to be...clear as a bell.  I did two dives with a former student, now open water certified diver Sven Gruetters, from Reading.  He is on a 3-year working visit to the States from Germany and scuba is just one of the many new experiences planned.  These were his first dives after certification in September and this was his first pumpkin carving ever, and it was underwater!  Jim Sponseller joined us for our first tour, 1:09 run time to 27' max depth.  Dive #2 started on the platform at 20' for the carving and we finished off the :51 minute runtime with a brief tour of the platforms looking for other carvers, 24' max depth.  I escorted Sven to the exit then returned to our platform to check on Christina Bupp who was working solo on her spider creation; she was just finishing up so we paused for a Kodak moment.

The real attraction of the day was Riley, granddaughter of Ed & Sally Morales...she was our resident spiderwoman and fit right into the theme of the day.

Thanks to all the diving carvers and to everyone for their contribution to yet another fun and exciting UW event sponsored by York Divers.  Thanks Jim & Linda!
