Ice Diving at BSC, Saturday, February 7, 2009
Chris M., Jim W., Paul G. and I got in for another ice dive today. We
couldn't have done it without the surface support of John T. and
George W., thanks guys! The ice grew to about 5" thickness since our last
shore entry through brash ice so we decided
to cut our way in this time to enjoy the traditional triangle surface entry.
Although the shoreline ice was much thinner than our designated
entry point, it was sufficient thickness to support a walking diver with gear.
Our triangle target zone had plenty of strength for our entry and exit, even
with water making its way onto the ice surface due to sag. We entered just
south of the road entry point, in about 20' of water and actually
dropped in right beside the new stand of evergreens for fish habitat. This
was a perfect spot for thickness, bottom depth and light zone to our tie in.
Vis was agreeable for this time of year and the water temp remains a steady 38F.
Thanks to Tibz for sharing some of his pics for this page.
The weather forecast for the week looks dismal for ice survival but if it
holds up, Ice Diver Specialty training will be offered.
